Of the many strange twists of the legacy of Lookout Mountain Laboratory is the history of the facility in which it was housed in Laurel Canyon. Auctioned off by the Department of Defense around 1970, it has gone through a series of private owners. Rumors abound, but it seems safe to say that it was used for a bit as a porn studio in the 1970s. In the 80s, parties were hosted there by an actor known for playing Native American roles in Hollywood films. In the 2000s, the facility served as a home for a federal judge, and doubled as an art studio. The most recent owner, however, is the most famous: Jared Leto. Recently, I was interviewed for a story in SFGate on Leto’s new place: “Famously weird actor owns secret Cold War military compound in California.”
